DAILY DRESSAGE NEWS

WHAT IS DRESSAGE?
From the USDF (US Dressage Federation)

"The fundamental purpose of dressage is to develop, through standardized progressive training methods, the horse's natural athletic ability and willingness to perform, thereby maximizing its potential as a riding horse."

From the American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language (slow) :

"NOUN: The guiding of a horse through a series of complex maneuvers by slight movements of the rider's hands, legs, and weight.

ETYMOLOGY: French, preparation, training, dressage, from dresser, to set up, arrange, train, from Old French drecier, to set up, arrange..."

From the British Horse Society:

"Dressage is the term used to describe the complete training of the horse ridden on the flat although it has an important role to play in the training of the horse for most disciplines.  Its origins lie in movements taught to horses used in war - to enable them to evade a hostile enemy at close quarters.
At its most basic level, it develops an obedient and responsive horse who can then go on to train for any purpose.  At its most advanced, it is perhaps the most demanding Olympic discipline, requiring years of expert training to reach Grand Prix level. "
